Hastings Deering stand by their LGBT Mates

On Sunday 17 May 2020 Hastings Deering will celebrate IDAHOBIT and the diversity of their business and the communities in which they operate.

IDAHOBIT is an internationally recognised and supported day of significance that aims to draw the attention of policymakers, opinion leaders, social movements, the public and the media to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ people internationally.

“This year marks the 30th Anniversary of IDAHOBIT Day in QLD and Hastings Deering is delighted to once again celebrate this important day on the LGBTIQ calendar as part of our Together as One program” said Kelly Jury, Manager - Building Construction Industries.

IDAHOBIT stands for International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia. It’s recognized and celebrated on May 17 to commemorate the World Health Organisation’s decision in 1990 to declassify homosexuality as a mental disorder.

“We need points of connection and togetherness that are visible, strong and proud. Diversity Days such as IDAHOBIT are so important to the LGBTIQ community and allow us to celebrate and recognize the diversity of our business and the communities in which we operate.”

Despite current COVID-19 challenges Hastings Deering is recognizing and celebrating IDAHOBIT with a virtual event hosted by member organization ACON. The session will explore the important issue of sexuality and gender diversity and will also see Western Sydney University launch a research report “Home Is Where Our Story Begins” which looks at the experiences of sexuality and gender diverse CALD people in Greater Western Sydney during the marriage equality debate.

“Every single one of us has a story to tell and IDAHOBIT is another opportunity for Hastings Deering and the LGBTIQ community to share these stories and bring people together – and right now that is something we all need,” said Ms. Jury.
